Cassina: Professionalism and Style
Cassina is an Italian brand whose elegance knows no boundaries: professionalism and style have defined it from the very beginning. Its history spans nearly a century and features collaborations with some of the most renowned names in international design.
Today, the company is part of the Poltrona Frau group but has always preserved its distinct identity. Its hallmark is in creating iconic furniture pieces for the home and office, blending bold and original design with the elegance and taste that define Made in Italy craftsmanship.
Cassina: The Story of an Iconic Italian Brand
The brand’s story began in 1927 with brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, who opened a small workshop in Meda, in the heart of Brianza. The world was in a state of flux between two wars, and economic crises delayed the brand’s growth until the 1950s.
During that decade, things began to change significantly: the brothers were given the opportunity to design and furnish the interior of the Italian cruise ship, Doria. It was during this project that they partnered with Giò Ponti, a visionary Italian architect and one of the fathers of modern design. This collaboration led to the creation of the Leggera chair, which remains one of the brand’s bestsellers today.
In the 1960s, designers, architects, and artists such as Philippe Starck, Andrea Branzi, and Le Corbusier helped elevate Cassina to worldwide fame. The brand expanded beyond chairs and armchairs to include furniture and other interior design pieces.
“Without thought, there is no beauty.”
This is the spirit of a brand that continues to shine through its elegance, outstanding craftsmanship, and authenticity.
Giò Ponti, Cassina, and the Birth of Modern Design
It’s worth taking a closer look at Giovanni Ponti—known to all as Giò—a Milanese architect and visionary of the last century, whose work greatly influenced both the growth of the brand and post-war design as a whole. How? His creations and ideas evolved over time, shaped by his experiences and projects.
Before the 1950s, his style reflected tradition and drew upon it to create something entirely new, introducing design concepts never before conceived. Later, he began experimenting with the fusion of traditional influences and modern elements, giving life to iconic pieces such as the Leggera and Superleggera chairs produced by Cassina.
